Antenatal Care in Pallara
Care From Early Pregnancy
Antenatal care is the care you receive while you’re pregnant. It helps keep track of your health and your baby’s development, and gives you the chance to ask questions at each stage. At Pallara Medical, our GPs provide antenatal care from your first positive pregnancy test, and Dr Nav has a particular interest in pregnancy care.
Many people see their GP for much of their pregnancy care, working together with the hospital where they plan to give birth. Seeing the same GP throughout can make it easier to talk about how you’re feeling, physically and emotionally, as your pregnancy progresses.
Your First Antenatal Visit
Book an appointment once you know you’re pregnant. At your first visit, your GP will confirm the pregnancy, estimate your due date and talk with you about your health history, medications and lifestyle.
Your GP will usually arrange early blood tests, such as your blood group, iron levels and screening for some infections, and discuss a dating scan. It’s also a good time to talk about supplements. Folic acid helps lower the risk of some birth defects, and an iodine supplement is generally recommended during pregnancy. Your GP can explain the right doses for you.

Tests and Scans During Pregnancy
Throughout pregnancy you’ll be offered a series of checks. These can include screening tests for chromosomal conditions in the first trimester, a detailed ultrasound at around 18 to 20 weeks, and a glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes, usually between 24 and 28 weeks.
At each visit your GP may check your blood pressure, urine and your baby’s growth. Some screening tests are optional, and your GP will explain what each one looks for, so you can decide what’s right for you and your family.
Vaccines and Shared Care
Two vaccines are recommended during pregnancy. The flu vaccine can be given at any stage, and the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine is recommended between 20 and 32 weeks of each pregnancy. Both help protect you and your baby in the first months of life. See flu vaccination for more.
If you choose GP shared care, your GP and your birthing hospital share your antenatal visits, and the hospital takes over for the birth. Your GP can talk with you about how shared care works with your chosen hospital and when you’ll need hospital appointments.
Looking After Yourself During Pregnancy
Pregnancy can bring nausea, tiredness, back pain, heartburn and changes in mood. Your GP can suggest ways to manage these and check whether any symptoms need further review. It’s also important to talk about medications, including over-the-counter and herbal products, before you take them.
If you notice bleeding, severe abdominal pain, severe headaches, swelling of the face or hands, fluid leaking or fewer baby movements than usual, contact your GP or hospital straight away, or call 000 in an emergency. Talking about how you’re feeling emotionally is just as important as your physical checks.
Gentle exercise such as walking or swimming, a balanced diet and enough rest all support a healthy pregnancy. Your GP can give advice that suits your stage of pregnancy and any health conditions you have.
