Planning Ahead for Your Trip
Overseas travel can expose you to infections that aren’t common in Australia. A travel health appointment helps you work out which vaccines and medicines you need, based on where you’re going, how long you’ll stay, what you’ll be doing and your own health.
Book a GP appointment six to eight weeks before you leave if you can. Some vaccines need more than one dose, and protection takes time to build. If your trip is sooner, still book in, as there may be vaccines or advice that can help.
Your Destination
Vaccines You May Need
Depending on your destination, your GP may recommend vaccines such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, Japanese encephalitis or cholera. Your GP will also check that your routine vaccines are up to date, including measles, tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough, and the flu vaccine.
Yellow fever vaccine can only be given at an approved yellow fever vaccination centre. If your destination requires it, your GP can advise you on where to go and what documentation you’ll need.

Medicines and Health Advice
Travel health is about more than vaccines. For some destinations, your GP may discuss medicines to prevent malaria, as well as advice on food and water safety, insect bite prevention, travellers’ diarrhoea and altitude sickness.
If you take regular medications, ask your GP about a letter describing them and enough supply for your trip. People with ongoing health conditions, pregnant travellers and families with young children may need extra planning. The Australian Government’s Smartraveller website has destination-specific advice.
What to Bring and Costs
Bring your travel itinerary, dates and any vaccination records you have, including childhood records if available. This helps your GP avoid unnecessary doses and plan a schedule that fits your departure date.
Most travel vaccines aren’t funded under the National Immunisation Program, so there’s usually a cost for the vaccine itself, separate from the consultation. Ask reception about current fees when you book. See our vaccinations page for routine vaccines.
Staying Healthy While You’re Away
As well as vaccines, simple everyday habits can help prevent some travel illnesses. Wash your hands often, drink bottled or treated water where advised, and choose food that is freshly cooked and served hot.
Protect yourself from mosquito bites with insect repellent, long sleeves and screened or air-conditioned rooms. Avoid touching animals, including dogs, monkeys and bats, as some carry rabies.
Consider travel insurance that covers medical care, and carry a list of your medications and allergies. If you become unwell during or after your trip, especially with a fever, see a doctor and mention where you’ve travelled.
When you return home, keep your vaccination records in a safe place. Some vaccines last for many years, and your records will help your GP plan for future trips. If you travel often, ask your GP which vaccines may need boosters in the future.
