Specialist Referrals in Pallara
Starting With Your GP
When you need a specialist opinion, your GP is usually the first step. At Pallara Medical, our GPs assess your symptoms, review your medical history and talk with you about whether a referral is needed. A GP referral also matters for costs: in most cases, Medicare only pays a rebate for a specialist consultation when you have a valid referral.
Common referrals include cardiologists, dermatologists, gynaecologists, orthopaedic surgeons, paediatricians and ear, nose and throat specialists. Your GP can also refer you to allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, podiatrists and dietitians, and to psychologists where appropriate. If you need imaging first, see our X-ray referrals page.
How a Referral Works
Referrals are written after an in-person consultation at the clinic. Your GP examines you, explains why a specialist opinion would help and writes a referral letter. The letter includes your symptoms, relevant history, current medications and any test results, so the specialist has the information they need from your first appointment.
Once you have the referral, you book the appointment directly with the specialist’s rooms. After your visit, the specialist usually sends a report back to your GP. Your GP can then go through the findings with you and help coordinate any treatment, tests or follow-up care that the specialist recommends.

Choosing a Specialist
You can ask to be referred to a particular specialist, or your GP can suggest options. It can help to think about waiting times, location, fees and whether you would prefer a private specialist or a public hospital outpatient clinic. Public clinics usually have no fee but can have longer waiting lists.
Specialist fees vary, and some specialists charge more than the Medicare rebate. Before your appointment, it’s worth asking the specialist’s rooms about their fees and any out-of-pocket costs. If you have private health insurance, check what your policy covers, especially if a procedure or hospital stay might be needed.
Before and After Your Appointment
Take your referral letter, any recent test results or scans, a list of your medications and a short list of questions to your specialist appointment. Writing down your symptoms, when they started and what makes them better or worse can make the visit more useful.
Referrals cannot be backdated, so please book a GP appointment before your specialist visit if you need a new or renewed referral. If you have an ongoing condition, your GP can talk with you about how often your referral needs renewing and keep track of reports from each specialist involved in your care.
Referrals for Ongoing Conditions
If you live with a long-term condition such as diabetes, heart disease or arthritis, you may see several health professionals over time. Your GP can bring this together in a care plan, so each specialist and allied health provider knows their role and has up-to-date information.
Your GP also keeps copies of specialist reports in your health record. This makes it easier to see how your condition is changing, review your medications and decide together when another specialist review would be helpful.
If you move to a new GP or clinic, ask for a copy of your specialist letters so your care can continue smoothly.

Common Questions
How long does a GP referral last?
A referral from a GP to a specialist is usually valid for 12 months, unless your GP writes a different period.
Can I get a referral without an appointment?
No. Referrals are written after an in-person consultation with your GP.
Can I choose which specialist I see?
Yes. Let your GP know if you have a preference, and they can address the referral to that specialist.
What if my referral has expired?
Book a GP appointment before your next specialist visit. Your GP can review your condition and write a new referral if it’s still needed.
